2010/2011 ANNUAL REPORT:
|
This Section held its annual legislative meeting in Annapolis
and has actively monitored a variety of bills of interest to
Section members, who participate in the legislative process
by providing testimony before the legislature and attending
workgroups and commissions as well as monitoring and
responding to regulations issued by the state agencies that
may affect seniors, nursing homes, continuing care retirement
communities and assisted living facilities. It offered a
range of elder law courses, including “MD Uniform Adult
Guardianship and Protective Proceedings Jurisdiction Act
(MD UAGPPJA),” “Medical Assistance Planning,” “Hot
Topics in Elder Law” and a course designed to give attorneys
the opportunity to become accredited for the preparation,
presentation and prosecution of claims for veterans’ benefi ts
before the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The Section
also organized its annual free, statewide legal clinic for
seniors on Law Day, partnering with local aging agencies and
senior centers, where volunteer attorneys answered questions
and provided assistance to seniors in preparing Health Care
Power of Attorneys and Living Will/Advance Directive forms.
It continues to consider the feasibility of expanding its reach
to include certain disability law issues, helping to launch and
support the new Special Needs Law Study Group; assists
with the printing costs of brochures developed by Legal
Aid to provide consumers with information about nursing
home discharge proceedings and related topics; and plans
to assist with the printing costs of an updated handbook
about guardianship. |
